Bursary deadline approaching

Canadian Federation of University Women

Every spring the Sunshine Coast Club of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) awards several bursaries to mature Sunshine Coast women who want to continue their education at a post-secondary level.

In 1990, when the bursary fund was started, the goal was to raise $500 for a single bursary, to go to a student of Capilano College (now Capilano University). Since then, more than $108,000 has been raised. Last spring nine bursaries were awarded: three of $500, and six of $1,000.

Originally the bursaries were given only to college and university students. Nowadays, with many people taking courses on-line and working towards a goal one step at a time, the course need only be part of an accredited programme leading to a degree, diploma or certificate. The CFUW has helped women studying in a variety of fields.

If you are interested in applying for a bursary, an information sheet and the application form are available on the club’s website: cfuwsc.org. Click on the bursaries tab at the top. This year’s deadline is May 9.

In awarding the bursaries, many factors are considered, including financial need, residency on the Sunshine Coast, the length of the chosen program and life experiences.

Contributions to the CFUWSC bursary fund can be made by contacting Jolyne Ball at 604- 885-0351. All the money donated goes into the bursaries, and tax-deductible receipts are issued for donations over $20.
