Blue Flag Canada inspector commends Gibsons Marina

Environment

Environmental Defence Canada – the agency administering the International Blue Flag eco-certification program – recently conducted a control visit at Gibsons Marina to ensure its stringent environmental and educational criteria are being met during the busy boating season. Since May 2015 the marina has been owned by Klaus Fuerniss Enterprises, Inc., and received International Blue Flag eco-certification in June of this year.

The agency’s highly complimentary report, received Aug. 31, stated: “Blue Flag Canada commends [the marina] on its environmental stewardship and education initiatives.” The report particularly noted the marina’s “great educational and environmental initiatives, involving a range of stakeholders, on topics such as water conservation, garbage and climate change, among others.”

The Blue Flag inspector’s site visit coincided with the handover of a $1,000 cheque to the Chapman Creek Hatchery, presented by Klaus Fuerniss as part of the marina’s partnership in the hatchery’s new children’s summer camp project.

Gibsons Marina is the only marina on the western seaboard of North America certified to fly the International Blue Flag, denoting commitment to excellence in environmental education, water quality, environmental management, and safety and services.
