Even blindfolded, Jason Lewis is a Rubik’s Cube master.

Elphinstone Secondary’s 13-year-old Jason Lewis might look like an ordinary teen, but he’s a Sunshine Coast Rubik’s Cube master.

“It usually takes me between 21 and 22 seconds to complete it,” Lewis said, noting he used to play with Rubik’s Cube when he was eight, but just got back into it last year when someone brought one to school.

He saw a competition online for students who wanted to try to beat the cube at Science World. He signed up in November, then started practising daily.

On Dec. 13 Jason travelled to Vancouver to compete, and while he didn’t beat the best time of just under 17 seconds to solve the cube, he did bring home the win in the blindfolded category.

Jason was the only participant to get all of the colours lined up correctly while blindfolded — it took him just 3 minutes and 46 seconds.

He was pleased with the win but noted “you have to just cross your fingers” and hope for the best when you can’t see what you’re doing.

Jason said he’s thinking about showing off his Rubik’s Cube solving talent in the next talent show at Elphinstone Secondary School since his notoriety is growing.

“A lot of kids want me to do it, so I might,” he said.
