Bat counters wanted

S.C. Wildlife Project

The Sunshine Coast Wildlife Project is sending out the bat signal to find volunteers to participate in the Second Annual B.C. Bat Count.

Residents who know of a bat colony occupying a bat house, roof, barn, attic, bridge or tree on their property or elsewhere in the region are encouraged to contact the Wildlife Project.

“This is the perfect opportunity for community members who love wildlife to help collect vital scientific information,” Wildlife Project leader Michelle Evelyn said. “You can learn more about local species and help conserve threatened wildlife. And all bat count participants will receive a free bat T-shirt, bat information guide and bat house.”

If desired, Wildlife Project biologists are available to assist with the count and visit your property to assess your bat situation, identify the bat species, and provide you with information on safe evictions and bat houses.

The Annual Bat Count is being promoted by the Wildlife Project and BC Community Bat Projects with funding from Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and Environment Canada to collect essential data on threatened bat populations.
