LES is one of only four schools in the province to participate in a pilot project called Girls on the Run, a 10-week program that teaches pre-teen girls to recognize inner strengths and define their lives on their own terms through games, activities and fitness.

The after-school program runs every Tuesday and Thursday, starting in April and culminates with a 5 km run in June.

Home schoolers and Langdale elementary girls in grades three to five can register on-line at https://www.eply.com/2014SpringGirlsProgramRegistration834614.

The driving force behind this is Langdale resident Michelle March, who will volunteer her time to coach and manage the project.

March learned about Girls on the Run when she was living in Ontario where the program has been introduced in more than 120 schools. Langdale participants won't pay a fee, but March observes the true cost is $139 per participant, and the group will need to hold a garage sale to raise funds, even though the Ontario chapter is donating materials and resources in this pilot year.

The website of the Ontario chapter of Girls gives all the details about the who, what and why of this international organization, see: http://girlsontherun.ca/.

If you'd like me to mention your event, please email the details to laurahou@telus.net or phone, 604-886-0415. This column is published every other week throughout the year.
