Volunteers are invited to join the work party which starts at 11 a.m. Refreshments will be served to all workers.

The community centre on Gambier Island will celebrate its 20-year anniversary with an open house wine and cheese party on May 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. 

All residents are welcome and an open invitation is extended to former residents who’ve moved to the mainland. RSVP by calling 604-886-4811 or by email, [email protected].

After the first community centre burned down on Easter Sunday in 1987, a new hall was built on land donated by Helen Negroponte with funds donated from the Anavets, grants from Go-BC, money from the seniors group for kitchen equipment and many hours of volunteer labour. The new hall opened on May 22, 1994.

The FUSE Community Work Hub will sponsor its 2014 Barn Raiser at the Gibsons Public Market at 473 Gower Point Road on May 29 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Five food entrepreneurs will pitch their startup ideas for local food and agriculture-based social enterprises. Tickets are only $15 and include a sampling of local cuisine and refreshments. Participants will also vote on one enterprise to support and help lift off.

Looking ahead, Deer Crossing the Art Farm will sponsor a summer arts workshop for ages 8 to 14. Cost is $150 for the week of July 7 to 12. Eight multidisciplinary artists will help learners explore a range of mediums, including multi-media installation, semi-permanent sculpture, film and sound scape, writing and story telling, theatre and puppetry.
