Halfmoon Happenings

Halfmoon Bay

On Monday, Sept. 18, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCM-SAR) Station 12 Halfmoon Bay will be hosting an open house and recruiting fair at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt, 5 to 8 p.m. If you are a marine enthusiast who likes to learn new skills, consider volunteering. They are looking for both active crew positions and supporting society volunteers. If you are interested in joining RCM-SAR, email recruiting@rcmsar12.org or call 604-885-7069. See rcmsar12.org for more.

Pickleball season has started and happens at Halfmoon Bay Elementary School every Wednesday at 7 p.m. All levels of play welcome. All equipment is supplied. Cost is $3. First time players are free.

Halfmoon Bay Fire Department hosts their Run Until It Burns 10k event on Oct. 1. This fundraiser event will help pay for life-saving equipment for our local volunteer fire department, support healthy living and help the Chatelech and Elphinstone running teams.

Whether you are an experienced runner or just starting to get in shape, it is a great event for the whole family. The course runs from Fire Hall #2 to Fire Hall #1. Basically, you’ll do a 3.5km loop around the Welcome Woods neighbourhood before heading north on Redrooffs all the way to the finish.

Poppa Greg and the Chillin’ Dylans will be playing Oct. 21 at the Boogie, Brats and Beer event that ties in to the AppleFest celebrations. Tickets are available at Welcome Woods Market and Halfmoon Bay General Store.

The AppleFest committee is looking for up and coming artists who are waiting to be discovered. New for this year, AppleFest is included in the Art Crawl on the Oct. 20 to 22 weekend at Coopers Green Park. This is a great way to display your talents to the community. In May this year Russell deCarle came to Halfmoon Bay to perform in a sold-out concert. Although Coopers Green Hall is a small venue, deCarle was appreciative of the audience that turned up that night.

He is best known as bassist and vocalist for the iconic Canadian band Prairie Oyster. DeCarle has just released his new solo album, Alone in This Crowd, and will be promoting it this fall. The album has a southern soul feel, with eight new original songs and three obscure covers.

He wants to repay the support given to him by including Coopers Green Hall on his Canadian tour on Oct. 27. DeCarle is also bringing guitarist Steve Briggs of Powell River along and will have local boys Joe Stanton and Simon Paradis open for him. Tickets for $25 are at HMB General Store, Welcome Woods Market and Strait Music.

To have your say at the Bay, contact me before 5 p.m. Monday at teknight@telus.net or 604-885-5034.
