TUNIS, Tunisia - The prime minister's office says Tunisia's Central Bank chief will remain in office despite an effort by the president to fire him, amid mounting tensions in the country's leadership.
Ridha Saidi, the deputy prime minister for economic affairs, told The Associated Press in an interview that the president did not have the requisite support of the prime minister to fire Mustapha Kamel Nabli.
Saidi said Monday that Nabli "will remain the governor," but there will be discussions about changes to certain policies.
President Moncef Marzouki announced last week that he had fired the central bank chief, a World Bank economist.
An uprising in Tunisia sparked revolts around the Arab world, and Tunisia's transition to democracy is being closely watched across the region.
