Obama: US emerging from 'dark cloud of war' as he outlines end of Afghanistan conflict

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan - President Barack Obama says the U.S. is emerging from more than a decade under the "dark cloud of war," with the U.S. combat role in Afghanistan ending and the war in Iraq now over.

In excerpts released ahead of a televised address Tuesday, Obama says the U.S. has a clear path to fulfil its mission in Afghanistan.

Obama will tell Americans that after years of war, "We can see the light of a new day."

After arriving in Afghanistan for a secret trip Tuesday, Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai (HAH'-mihd KAHR'-zeye) signed an agreement outlining a long-term U.S.-Afghanistan partnership. Obama says the U.S. will shift into a support role as Afghans step forward.

The president says that after a decade of conflict abroad, it is time to renew America.
