Editor:

I am confused as to why there was a†brainstorming session planned to ask people where they think smoking should be banned outdoors on the Coast and in what areas they would like to see this done.

Why not just check with all the other cities, towns and municipalities?

I am confused as to why Coast Reporter had their question of the week†asking†who wants to see more smoking bylaws here. Havenít we been there, done that?

Didnít we already have a survey on this in the fall? And donít we know non-smokers will answer yes, and the over-abundance of smokers on the Coast will answer no.

With most municipalities and towns and cities around us for hundreds of miles already having brought in extended smoking bylaws, because it is the right thing to do for peopleís health and peopleís right to breathe clean air, itís as if†with this particular issue, the Sunshine Coast is still in Grade 2, while all others have moved on to high school or university.†

A few years ago, Sechelt council†voted down an extended bylaw on cigarette smoking. Who knows what they were thinking, although I read some of their unbelievable comments. And the Town of Gibsons, with†a bylaw already written up some years ago, was asked in person by the chief medical officer†in a council meeting to bring it forward and vote on it. They have never†done so.

Grandiose schemes seem more important than the health of residents.

To me, it is†incomprehensible. Just get on with what should have been done by now.

Valerie Pusey, Gibsons
