Deconstructing Dinner opens spring season

Green Film Series

The popular Green Film Series, which showcases documentary films on the environment and sustainability issues, will open the spring season with the Deconstructing Dinner series and a talk with writer and producer Jon Steinman next Thursday, Feb. 6 at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse.

The documentary film series invites us to rediscover food in our communities and our kitchens.

Deconstructing Dinner began as a weekly radio talk show and podcast in 2006. Steinman created the series after working in restaurants and as a food journalist. The popular show ended in 2010 but has been resurrected as a documentary television series with James Beard Award winning filmmaker Declan O’Driscoll.

The series explores and deconstructs six popular foods. Three of them, wheat, eggs and garlic, will be shown during the Green Film Series screening.

Steinman collaborates with chefs, farmers, scientists and backyard gardeners to explore these foods. Where to they come from? How are they processed? And how can we grow them locally?

This event is produced by Rhizome Up! Media CCC Ltd. in community partnership with the One Straw Society. The One Straw Society works to connect and empower Sunshine Coast residents to create food sovereignty and community resilience. Rhizome Up! Media publishes the online magazine Sustainable Coast along with producing film and other events that bring together community members and organizations on the Coast.

“We chose these films because these
products make up such a large portion
of what many of us eat,” said Chris Hergesheimer, food systems network coordinator of One Straw Society. “I think the episodes surrounding these three foods will really be eye-opening for a lot of
people, and the Food Action Network is excited to be partnering with the Green Film Series on this event.”

Tickets are $10 at the door or can be purchased online at www.greenfilms.ca.

Doors open at 7 p.m. with the film starting at 7:30.
