The Elphi senior boys lost their first league game last week, but rebounded with a solid showing at a weekend tournament.
Elphi lost 66-57 to Bodwell last Tuesday.
Head coach Mike Sopow said it was a tough loss in a very winnable game.
“We were very flat, and it was just one of those games where nothing was going for us,” Sopow said. “The only thing we can take from this game is that at least it happened now and not in the playoffs.”
On the weekend, the Cougars took part in the St. John’s Jam tournament opening with an 82-71 loss to the number-three-ranked RC Palmer from Richmond.
But Elphi didn’t let the loss get to them as they won their next two games — a 57-46 decision against St. Pat’s, ranked fourth in single A, and a 64-50 win over St. John’s, who are ranked second in single ‘A’.
Nate Haglund and Austin Perry had strong games against St. Pat’s, while Nolan Lewarne came out firing, shooting lights out from perimeter, and Austin Perry had another strong game battling down in the paint in the win over St. John’s.
“Overall the team played well at the tournament — we had a solid contribution from everyone,” Sopow said. “Down the stretch we are going to have to start to play a solid 40 minutes. Right now we relax for stretches of the game, which tends to hurt us. Going into playoffs we want to make sure we are doing all the little things necessary to win.”
Another fourth-quarter rally fell short Monday as the Elphi bantam girls lost 30-23 to the Rockridge Ravens.
Rockridge had scored 50 points against both West Vancouver and Argyle and 57 against St. Thomas Aquinas (STA), but the Cougars’ tenacious defence held them to 11 points in the first half before Rockridge scored 13 straight points in the third-quarter.
The short-handed Cougars, with only seven players, narrowed the gap to 26-23 at one point, but conceded the last two baskets of the game.
Emily Jaschinski led Elphi with 10 points, while Camelle Manuel added six.
The Elphi bantam boys had a solid last two games beating Sutherland 48-42 on Jan. 20 and STA 43-34 on Jan. 23. The Cougars are 4-1 in league play.

The Cougars open the playoffs on Monday, Feb. 3 against Carson Graham.
