Inform yourself Coun. Hockley

Editor:

Reference is made to your article “council approves budget and ferry support (Coast Reporter, Jan. 17).

I find it difficult to follow Sechelt Coun. Doug Hockley’s reasoning that not supporting BC Ferry Coalition’s advocacy for an economically viable ferry service at affordable prices stimulates “shop locally behaviour” in our southern Sunshine Coast residents.

How do the goods “shopped locally” come to our Sunshine Coast? I know, by ferries.

Are the fares affordable? No. Particularly the commercial fares are far out of line with those on the other major routes, based on a “cost per mile travelled basis”!

Route 30 Tsawassen – Duke Point is 37 miles long and has a commercial fare of $5.85 per foot for the truck, which works out at $0.1581 per mile. The return fare on our Rte. 3 is $6.40 for 20 miles or $0.32 per mile, or more than double that of Rt. 30! Why?

It drives up the cost of living for all our residents!

Similar types of ship sail on Rte. 30 as on our route!

It is about time that some councilors inform themselves of the facts, face reality and support every effort for a fair deal from BC Ferries for our residents.
