question of the week

I’m voting yes

Perhaps some readers of my generation will remember the catchy ad jingle "Never borrow money needlessly, but when you must, borrow from folks you trust.”

The times are past that we can entirely live without borrowing money, but we can, and must, do it responsibly and confidently.

After looking over the prospect of civic borrowing to partially fund the new wastewater treatment plant that the District of Sechelt needs to provide a safe and clean environment for all its residents and visitors, I am happy to learn of the offer by the Green Municipalities Fund to provide a loan at a very low interest rate and to add a $1 million grant as well. It is a golden opportunity not to be missed.

I am, after learning more about the new, innovative technology, in favour of the new plant, which will deal with our waste products in an environmentally healthy manner for my grandchildren and their children.

The plant is proceeding regardless, and rejecting this generous offer will only mean that Sechelt has to commit more of its current funds to pay for it, leaving less for other needs should they arise in the near future.

When we have an opportunity like this to make responsible use of funds that are available to any community meeting the green criteria, we should do so. Other needs always arise and supporting this proposal will allow Sechelt to keep more of its nest egg to deal with them. When the necessary referendum is held, I am voting yes, and I hope that residents of Sechelt will too.
