question of the week

It’s time for change

Watching our prime minister and his Conservative members of Parliament debate in the House of Commons shows just how far our system of parliamentary democracy has faltered under Conservative rule.

During question period when opposition members doing their duty ask specific questions of the government expecting truthful complete answers, the results are disgraceful. Twisting, turning, changing the subject and answering questions by asking their own off-topic questions makes getting the publicís accurate information all but impossible.

When seen together with the rigid control that the Prime Ministerís Office holds over all words and actions of Conservative MPs and Senators it leads one to wonder if our House of Commons rules us or the Prime Ministerís Office does.

Omnibus budget bills covering all manner of legislation are rammed through with no chance of meaningful debate on the impossible number of divergent new laws and directives included in their unwieldy size. The misuse of prorogation of Parliament whenever the going gets tough for the prime minister, gutting the environmental review process, voter suppression tactics and full attacks on science and scientists working for the government all add to the narrowing scope of full discussion and debate.

It is not just our crumbling democratic traditions, but also callous treatment of veterans who are cast aside with the new Veterans Charter and the massive partisan spending of public money advertising the whims of the Conservative party that degrade us.

And where does our MP John Weston stand on all this? Why, he only wants to talk about physical fitness and his other little obscure niche projects.

It is time for a change. Letís work together to get rid of these tyrants and get Canadaís government back on the path of a well-run democracy that holds to our historic traditions of honesty and integrity for all Canadians.

Neil Edmunds, Sechelt
