After high school, myself and many of my peers left the Coast to seek employment and education with no thought of return since there wasn’t much to offer young adults here.
Now as parents, a few of us have returned to the comfort and safety of our hometown to raise our children, but we share common concerns; small retail businesses struggling to stay alive, ferry fee increases (affecting us as commuters), ever-rising cost of living, little or no entertainment for children/families and limited employment/education for our children post-grad. With the elderly passing and the youth leaving, we face massive economic downturn.
We need sustainable commercial projects that bring employment, tourism and tax dollars into our community for economic development. I am shocked that the George Hotel (being a local business venture as opposed to “big box”) is not being welcomed with open arms. As a family, we certainly see the benefits outweighing any the issues such as fitting within “guidelines” or the “problems” that come with our town’s growth. This will be a huge asset for this community and it needs our support.
