Leadership students from Elphinstone Secondary School will be going door-to-door in Gibsons collecting food for the Elves Club this Tuesday Dec. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m.
Donations of non-perishable food and cash donations can be given to students who will have an official letter from the school to show as identification.
Donations will help fill up Elves Club hampers, which go out to local families in need at Christmas time. Hampers contain presents, groceries to make a turkey dinner with all the fixings and additional groceries to get families through the holidays.
Monetary donations can often mean more food for the hampers because the Elves Club is able to buy supplies in bulk.
“It can literally double what they can purchase,” said leadership class teacher Sarah Mani.
She said the student-led food drive has been an annual event, however some unexpected snow last year cancelled the effort.
“So we had a little blip, but we’re hoping to get right back in there and do it again,” she said.
Students plan to make their way door-to-door between Woodcreek Park, Lower Gibsons and Upper Gibsons on Dec. 10, but if residents will be away during the food drive they can leave donations outside their door with a note for students, Mani said.
If you’re uncertain whether your area will be reached and you have donations for pick up contact the school and leave a message for Mani at 604-886-2204.
“Otherwise, if they miss us they can drop donations off at the school during the next week and a half,” Mani added.
