The following letter was sent to Gibsons mayor and council and copied to Coast Reporter for publication.
I urge you and Gibsons council to withhold approval of the George Hotel project as it is currently being presented.
I do not object to a hotel in that location if only the scale were appropriate. This one would be like plunking the Hudsonís Bay department store onto our waterfront!
The hype about the supposed benefits doesnít convince me. As my daughter said when I told her about this ó people donít come to a place like Gibsons to stay in a luxury hotel; they come for the small town ambiance and the outdoor recreation possibilities.
Tourism here is seasonal. Gibsons, as a destination, lacks appeal in the winter rain ó thatís when residents who can afford it take off to warmer climes, not when tourists come here to stay in high-end hotels!
Iím also wondering how emergency vehicles will get to the waterfront once Winn Road is blocked and the only access will be a pedestrian corridor with stairs and an elevator at the bottom.
