Conor Lowe, Dave Halstead and Shawn Divers atop Soames Hill last Sunday for the inaugural Moustache Mountain Hiking Race.

The inaugural Moustache Mountain Hiking Race was held on Sunday, Nov. 24.

An official Movember “move” event, participants — moustachioed or not, male and female — raced from Soames Beach to the top of Soames Hill. The goal of the event was to raise awareness and funds for prostate and testicular cancers and men’s mental health challenges. New to Movember this year, move events exist to encourage physical activity and healthy living.

The Moustache Mountain race was organized by Sunshine Coast Alternative School teacher David Hallstead, who represented the Movember Team: Sunshine MOast Crew. Prizes were generously donated by local businesses Bull Chophouse & Meating Place, The Gumboot Restaurant & Café, and personal trainer Ben Smith of Vibe Fitness.

First place male participant was Aaron Fuller, first place female participant was Shell Windsor, and winner of Best Moustache went to Sean Divers.

Thank you to all participants, business sponsors and Smitty’s Oyster House for sponsoring a fantastic post-race celebration.

Movember is an international campaign held in November that encourages men to fundraise and highlight men’s health through growing moustaches and participating in their community’s Movember events.
