If you build it they will come. Itís not just a famous movie line anymore. Itís a tagline for an amazing opportunity that could make Sechelt a world-class mountain bike destination.
A brand new, year-round mountain bike Gravity Park ó the only year-round park of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, has secretly been carved out on a 60-hectare property in Sechelt Inlet over the past year.
Local mountain bike celebrities Dylan Dunkerton, Curtis Robinson and Kyle Norbertson known as the Coastal Crew, enlisted the help of fellow rider Linden Feniak, local contractor Darren Hemstreet and machine operator Kane Boyce to create a downhill trail network that could rival any of its kind in the world.
In fact, Coastal Crew is so confident they believe the Coast Gravity Park will rival that and exceed what is available in Whistler.
Bill Stockwell and his dad Ray (who owns the property) saw the potential for great things too. Bill had the idea for a housing development for the property, but when he saw the vision from the Coastal Crew, he knew the project could be something special.
The Stockwells are community-minded with their business ventures and are long-time Coasters. Bill is a family man and saw an opportunity to get young people involved, create jobs, and a source of inspiration for young people. Not to mention the opportunity to create a world-class tourist experience. The mountain bike community knows all too well what amazing mountain bike trails there are on the Sunshine Coast.
People come from all over to ride and now with the construction of this gravity park, our doors can be thrown wide open to the world.
There is still much more work to be done. So far four trails have been laid out with plans for up to six trails and a bike lift installed before the official opening date in the fall of 2014.
Ten community members have stepped up as shareholders, but more financial and community support is needed to fully see this dream become a reality.
We are fully supportive of this project. It speaks volumes of the community in which we live in. Here we have enterprising young entrepreneurs, that instead of leaving the Coast ó leaving their home to venture elsewhere, have chosen to stay at home and create a lasting legacy that has an incredible potential to benefit the Coast in so many positive ways. And we have other longstanding, hard working Coast business people, who realize the potential that is before them and are giving back to the community they live, love and work in. Itís a win-win-win in so many ways.
The sky is the limit. Prepare for lift off!
