I heard once that there is strength in numbers. Seven billion is a monumentally large number, so logically, it should carry with it monumental strength.
But just how strong are seven billion people? Strong enough to reach the moon? Strong enough to conquer world war? Strong enough to challenge the everyday status quo? Yes, on all counts. However, I believe the question of greatest importance has remained unasked: are seven billion people strong enough to destroy the planet, or save it?
We were given voices to be heard, and were given hearts to know right from wrong. I truly do believe every soul, past, present and future, has their own individual gift to share, and that everyone is capable of changing the world. All they need is the belief that they have the power to do so.
I started the Giving Tree project with the sole intent of making certain everyone knew that their voice and their opinion were important, and that what they thought really, truly mattered. I figured seven billion people were put on this earth, not to be exploited, but to be celebrated. I wanted to make all the ghosts visible, all the blind see, all the deaf hear, and above all, I wanted all the mutes to rediscover the gift of their voice. This is not my project, this is our project, this is our voice.
If you would like to contribute your hand to the tree, simply trace your hand, write a message on it about the environment and decorate it however you wish, cut it out, and send it the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association, who have been so kind to offer me their help. I hope everyone can see the beauty of this tree, and I hope that in some small way it can inspire you to make a difference in your everyday life. I have always believed that we can be anything we dream, so why not dream big!
