Skatepark to get a facelift

Sechelt council heard earlier this month that arts coordinator Siobhan Smith will be putting on a community event for youth and artists to create one or two murals at the Sechelt Skate Park.

The skate park is located at Chatelech Secondary School. Smith reported to council on April 3 that she had discussed the mural plans with Perry Schmitt, parks foreman in Sechelt.

She noted she has the commitment of local artist Davyd Oram who has agreed to help teach youth involved how to successfully paint a mural.

“Mr. Oram was also one of the skaters who helped build the skatepark,” Smith noted in her report.

The date for the mural painting event, dubbed Paint the Park, has not been decided yet, but Smith said she would like to see it happen before schools are closed for the summer so it’s easier to get high school students involved in the process.

Smith has also arranged for a meeting with Jim Barnum of Spectrum Skatepark Creations in North Vancouver to further discuss ways to improve the local skatepark.
