Look out for two timely and seasonal workshops at the Arts Building in Gibsons: The Chicken and The Egg with Annette Clark. 

This Saturday, March 23, from 2 to 4 p.m., there will be a lecture and slide show on raising free-range organic chickens, and next Saturday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. will be a workshop on making European Easter ornaments with eggs. Start Writing Now

Have you always wanted to write, but have trouble with that difficult first step? Or maybe you have produced a piece of writing, but it’s hiding in your drawer, unpublished. This Saturday, Woods Showcase in Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons presents a writing workshop for beginners, Start Writing Now, with experienced instructor Jan DeGrass. People

The National Theatre of London presents their latest production, People, coming to the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt this Sunday, March 24, at 2 p.m. by satellite and in HD. The play is by the award-winning writer Allan Bennett and is directed by Nicholas Hytner. It should be funny, entertaining and touching. Tickets can be reserved by phoning 604-885-4597.

My Father’s Story

My Father’s Story, 10 local actors with intriguing tales about their family, is offering one performance only at 3 p.m. this Sunday, March 24, at the Seniors Activity Centre in Sechelt. Tickets are at the door. Check their availability by phoning 604-885-3513.

Green film

The next film presented by the Green Film Series is timed for spring with local gardeners and food producers. Urban Roots will be screened on Monday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. at Gibsons Heritage Playhouse. In order to bring this film to upper Coast residents, a special screening will be held on Saturday, April 6, at 2 p.m. at the Iris Griffith Centre.

The film is the story of residents of Detroit taking control over the city’s unused land and reclaiming it to produce food. In doing so, they become more self-reliant and healthier, and some become entrepreneurs.

Sustainable Coast Magazine (www.sustainablecoast.ca) and the Gibsons Green Team are presenting the series, and it is a special project of the Sunshine Coast Film Society. The series is dedicated to using film as a tool for community engagement on environmental and sustainability issues.

There will also be plant starts and produce for sale along with a discussion about local food sustainability with members of the Food Action Network. Tickets for the Gibsons screening are $7 for SCFS annual members, $10 for other (includes single event membership).

Passion performed

The Passion is a concert of powerful, evocative music and prose entwined to tell the story of Christ’s betrayal, crucifixion and resurrection.

Sara Douglas, soprano, portrays all of the characters with Darryl Nixon at the piano. The two have performed this work twice before on the Coast and annually for the past 22 years. It will be performed at 7 p.m. on Good Friday, March 29, at St. Hilda’s Anglican Church, Sechelt, presented by A Piano and a Soprano.

Suggested donation is $10.

Art classes

The next session of Mary Jean Brown’s art classes starts March 27 and 28.

Artesia coffeehouse

Coast Cultural Alliance presents their monthly Artesia coffeehouse next Friday, March 29 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, and it will be all about jazz.

Walter Martella from Powell River will perform two sets, one in a duo with Karen Graves on saxophone and flute, the second to accompany vocalists Joy Germaine and Bev Nielsen.

The second half of the night will be dedicated to the Jazz Group of Seven led by John Frederickson, trumpet, with Carl Montgomery, alto sax, Ken Grunenberg, tenor sax, Bryan Airth, trombone, Steve Giltrow, guitar, John Parker Toulson, bass, Tim Enns, drums, with Graves sitting in on a few tunes.

Doors open at 7 with downbeat at 8 p.m.
