Busy weekend for firefighters

Gibsons

The Gibsons fire department had a busy weekend with eight calls that according to fire chief Bob Stevens were mostly senseless vandalism.

On Saturday night, March 2, someone lit a smoke bomb outside Cedar Grove Elementary School and funneled the smoke into the building.

“There was no real damage done to the building other than some scorch marks,” said Stevens. “We ventilated the building and left it in care of School District No. 46 staff. The RCMP were called to the scene and are investigating the incident.”

Stevens said there was also three public garbage cans set on fire — one in Dougall Park, one in Winegarden Park and another at the bottom of Inglis Trail.

“The only damage was the loss of the garbage cans,” he said. “Hopefully it was just a random spate of senseless vandalism.  We are not sure if the school and garbage can fires are related.”
