The Sunshine Coast Skating Club has announced Caitlin Jarvis as its skater of the month for February.

She is being recognized for her on-going commitment, leadership and volunteerism to the club and region.

Caitlin was the winner of the gold medal in gold ladies’ interpretive at the recent Winterskate Regional Championships and is the recipient of the regional award for the second consecutive year. She is also a CanSkate program assistant and is taking part in on-going trial judge and data specialist training.

She has been a long-time club member and participant in the Excel Sport Performance Academy, and maintains honour roll status in Grade 9 at Horizons Alternative School.

She says she loves the feeling of accomplishing something challenging and will always appreciate the life lessons skating has taught her. When she is not skating she likes to read, trampoline, swim and work at skate competitions.

Next up for the club is the VISI Super Series competition on Vancouver Island, year-end performance day, and a test day on April 2.

If you or someone you know would like to try a mini-session of CanSkate but have financial barriers, SoGo/Participaction has teamed up with the skate club to offer up to two full scholarships for the two-week spring extension. Sign-up now by contacting the club: www.sunshinecoastskatingclub.ca or look for the club on Facebook.

Dempster starts out strong

Gibsons Ryan Dempster made his spring training debut with the Boston Red Sox a memorable one on Tuesday, Feb. 26 pitching two perfect innings.

He didn’t allow a walk and struck out two in the Red Sox 15-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, which saw the Cardinals score 12 runs off Red Sox relievers in the final few innings.

Dempster then followed that up with an impressive three scoreless innings against the New York Yankees on March 3. He gave up one hit over the three innings in the 5-2 loss.
