Special Olympics Sunshine Coast, Gibsons basketball team, hosted its third tournament on Jan. 26 at Elphinstone Secondary School.

Two teams from North Vancouver travelled to the Coast to play the teams from Gibsons and Sechelt.

Chuck Bertrand and Mark Heidebrecht ably refereed the matches, and by the end of the round robin, North Vancouver teams were in first and third place, Gibsons and Sechelt held second and fourth. The last two games were very exciting match-ups, and the fans supported their teams with gusto.

The final game of the tournament, held between North Van 2 and Gibsons, was fast-paced and evenly matched with each team taking turns leading the score. At the last moment, Gibsons scored one last time to finish in first place.

Congratulations to all the teams who played their best and their coaches who showed skill and dedication in guiding their players. Thanks go to Samantha Mills and Laurie Miller for their excellent organizing and to timekeepers, scorers and the many other volunteers who supported this venture in so many ways from set up to the final take down.

Thanks also to Gibsons Family Network and the Sunshine Shack for providing food and drinks to keep athletes and fans full of energy throughout the day. Bob Hoy from the IGA helped make this possible through his generous donation of hot dogs for the event.

Special thanks go to the Sunshine Coast Credit Union for sponsoring the event.
