An impossible future

With a heavy heart I wanted to address the most recent letters in Coast Reporter regarding our mayor and council.

Weekly I read letters that are filled with negativity and bemoaning any and all changes made over the last year since our municipal election. The majority of the community, at the time of the election, voted for a radical change in the way Sechelt is perceived to the outside world. This massive community effort was aimed at sustainable growth; that is, combating the exodus of families from the Coast due to the lack of jobs to sustain these families.

Looking toward the future, our new mayor and council have steadfastly focused on this very goal. Having families staying on the Coast, even moving to the Coast, means that retirees looking to downsize their homes by selling will actually have a market for those homes.

It means there will be people available to care for our elderly when they cannot care for themselves, and it will mean a more secure future overall. But from the pouty, negative letters I read each week, it seems a select few are making this future impossible for any of us.

I encourage the community to recall the reasons you voted for Secheltís current mayor and council, and for those of you who didnít bother to vote, citing the futility of their contribution to the change we all desire, all I can say is youíve given up your opportunity to criticise.

Sandra Lesson, Sechelt
