New parents Tara Popp and Matt Hubbard proudly show off their new son Dominic, who is the first baby born on the Sunshine Coast for 2013.

The first baby of 2013 has finally arrived on the Sunshine Coast, much to the delight of proud parents Tara Popp, 21, and Matt Hubbard, 24.

Little Dominic Blake Hubbard-Popp was born on Jan. 9 at 4:55 p.m. at St. Mary’s Hospital in Sechelt.

The beautiful baby boy weighed seven pounds, 13 ounces and measured 21 inches long.

“He’s a super happy baby. He’s laid back and he sleeps well,” Tara told Coast Reporter this week.

When she went into labour on the morning of Jan. 9, the first call she made was to her aunt Catt Popp, who is a local delivery nurse.

Catt told Tara to make her way to St. Mary’s Hospital where the pair met.

“It was good to have her there,” Tara said.

Her aunt was able to help welcome Dominic into the world after Tara’s 15 hours of labour.

Matt’s mom, Terri Powell, while far away in Ottawa, was able to keep up to date with what was going on thanks to text messages and photos.

“It was great to be connected. In this day and age with cell phones and texting, I was getting play-by-play, minute-by-minute updates,” Powell said.

She got to meet Dominic in person on Jan. 11 when she arrived in Sechelt.

“He’s just a perfect little baby,” she said.

Popp took her “perfect” baby boy home to Sechelt last week where a steady stream of visitors have been congratulating the new parents.

Tara and Matt also received a special gift basket from the St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary to celebrate Dominic’s birth.
