The following letter was sent to member of Parliament John Weston and copied to Coast Reporter.
Dear Mr. Weston:
I am sure you were as shocked as I was over the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in December, appalled and then just numb when we saw the pictures of their innocence. Then we think — hey, it’s America, not Canada. And then there’s a quiet article saying your caucus, your Conservative Party, is trying to change more gun laws in Canada.
Forget the gun registry. You, by association, have actually already changed gun control far beyond that tool for peace officers — it’s called amnesty. In your infinite wisdom, you gave a pass to everyone because the law at that time was “intrusive” to rural gun owners. Now there is no registration — just a bunch of gun owners who have more rights than someone who wants to fly on a plane. Yes, John, I had to remove my shoes to fly on a flight to Montreal last June.
So, here is the challenge: Get off your back bench and bring forward a private member’s bill to ban all gun magazines over 10 bullets in Canada. If you can’t down the attacking polar bear in 10 shots, you will not survive that attack.
I am so tired of hearing about hunters when the truth is pandering and weakening laws to protect nut bars who want to own assault weapons in Canada and 100-shot magazines.
Canadians do not want “freedom” that does not protect our children or citizens at large and rightly believe that our peace officers and military are the only ones who should be armed with lethal assault weapons and magazines. Either you take responsibility or you sit in the back bench and quietly pretend that your government represents Canadians’ views.
Bonnie Nicol, Gibsons
