Welcome 2013 with a cool dip

Polar Bear swims

Hearty Coasters can welcome in 2013 with a cool dip in the ocean at two polar bear swims on Jan. 1.

In Davis Bay, the Sunshine Coast Lions Club is once again hosting the annual event. Registration starts at 11 a.m. with swimmers taking to the water at noon.

In Gibsons, the polar bear swim returns after a few years’ absence at Armours Beach.

The volunteers from the Elphinstone Marine Rescue Association and Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue unit 14 (formerly known as the coast guard auxiliary Unit 14) will be on hand to serve hot chocolate and coffee (courtesy of Tim Hortons) to all the brave souls who take a dip in the icy waters.

Registration starts at 10:30 a.m., while the whistle blows on the dot of 11 a.m. to start the race into the water. There will be prizes for the best costumes.
