Editor:
I was disappointed to walk in to the Gibsons Rec Centre and see the educational display taken down. I think the idea of a Christmas tree made of garbage is a clever one, highlighting the fact that at this time of year, I tend to make too much garbage.
I assume the Sunshine Coast Regional District’s vision is to encourage me to give fewer over-packaged gifts made of junky plastic that will break within a few weeks wrapped up in brand new wrapping paper.
Thinking about all these mistakes encourages me to give more genuine and lasting gifts (such as tickets to a sport or art event, registration in a class, donations to a charity, etc.), and to use creative wrapping solutions that aren’t garbage the next day. Also, since the SCRD has to deal with all the garbage I make (which takes up time and money), it makes sense that they would try to discourage me from making it in the first place.
