Doctor will be missed

We were unable to attend the farewell party for Dr. John Farrer on Nov. 2, so it was a pleasure to read about the event in the Nov. 9 edition of Coast Reporter.

We moved to the Coast in 1982, just before the birth of our second child, and John became our family doctor. He delivered one of our babies, tended to late night mysterious aches and pains, breathing difficulties, broken toes, serious wasp stings (who knew the youngest was allergic to their venom?) and assorted crises of one sort or another.

He has been a wonderful physician, thorough and caring. How many of us remember his visits to us in hospital, late at night, to talk about books or music or just to say the right thing that allowed a worried parent to relax or a feverish child to sleep? How many of us remember him drawing the inner ear on the paper over the examining table to explain an ear infection?

How many doctors come to the graduation ceremonies of their patients, to their weddings, to book launches and concerts? He may have arrived on the Coast 37 years ago as a general practitioner, but he leaves as a cherished friend, a honourary member of many local families. How reassuring to hear that he and Jane will be back. We’ll hold them to that promise.

Thank you so much, John. You will be missed beyond words.
