Elphinstone Secondary School basketball players Michelle Jakszuk and Henry Telfer practice their teaching skills in preparation for an all-day basketball camp for elementary school students set for Nov. 26 at the school.

The Elphinstone senior boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will be providing a full day of fun for local basketball enthusiasts in grades 5 to 7 on Monday, Nov. 26.

Grade 12 player Ellen Fallis, who assisted with the previous Cougar Camp, is excited about leading a group again.

“Last year’s camp was a blast. I had a really good day working with the kids,” she said. “They were very enthusiastic, and I think they learned a lot from the fun games we ran. There was a good turnout and I’m hoping we will get more girls as well as boys to sign up this year.”

Experienced fitness trainer Ginny Blattler will be doing speed, agility and quickness drills with participants during the 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. session to be held in the Elphi gymnasium. Campers need to bring their own lunch, snacks and drinks, as they will be with the two adult supervisors and 10 Elphi basketball players for the entire six hours. Cost for the program is $45, including a special T-shirt designed just for the camp.

Students from Langdale, Gibsons, Cedar Grove and Roberts Creek elementary schools are eligible to attend.

Henry Telfer, another Grade 10 player, who will be volunteering his time that day, put it this way: “I encourage anyone interested in basketball — even if you’ve never played before — to sign up. It’s going to be a fun day and a great way to stay active.”

Reservations can be made by calling Blattler at 604-886-0488 or emailing bginny@dccnet.com. Registration forms and medical/consent forms can be picked up at the four elementary schools or Elphinstone Secondary School.
