The senior and junior girls picked up a pair of North Shore championships last week with impressive wins in their respective league finals.

The junior girls remained undefeated this season with a four-set win (25-23, 25-14, 19-25, 25-21) over the Handsworth Royals in Gibsons on Nov. 7. It was the second straight North Shore title for the team, which hoisted the banner last year as juvenile girls champions.

Coach David Barnum said the home gym was alive with fans and the support really helped push the team to the win.

“The focus was maintaining offensive and defensive systems in anticipation of the Vancouver and District Championships,” said Barnum.

Those championships were held at Handsworth on Nov. 15 (past Coast Reporter press deadline). The top three from the tournament will advance to the provincials in Delta Nov. 23 to 24.

At the same time the junior girls were raising their banner, the senior girls were on the North Shore defending their North Shore title with a three-set win over Collingwood at Carson Graham in North Vancouver.

The Cougars, who are ranked number one in the province in AA, had little trouble with Collingwood, winning the match decisively.

“The team played very steady volleyball and put pressure on Collingwood with strong serving and hitting,” said coach Jan Richey.

Last Thursday Elphi beat Windsor and Collingwood in the AA challenge matches to determine seeding going into the Vancouver and District Championships, which started Wednesday at Notre Dame in Vancouver.
