The Elphi senior girls volleyball team just keeps on winning — this time, claiming top prize at a 24-team tournament in White Rock last weekend. Elphinstone Secondary School senior girls volleyball team is tops in the province, having secured the number one ranking in The Province newspaper’s weekly standings.

The Cougars continued their strong play, winning a 24-team tournament last weekend in White Rock against some of the top teams in the province.

In the gold medal final, Elphi knocked off the number one ranked AAA team in the province, Seaquam, in two straight sets, playing some of their best volleyball of the season.

On Monday night, Elphi beat Rockridge 3-0 in the North Shore League semifinals, setting up the title game against Carson Graham Wednesday night (past Coast Reporter’s deadline).

With a win, the Cougars would be off to their second straight Lower Mainland championships, which are set to start next week at Notre Dame and will feature some of the stronger AA teams in the province. The top two teams from the Lower Mainland championships qualify for the provincials.

Junior girls

The Elphi junior girls are having an equally strong season.

So far they are undefeated in regular season play and playoff action and took second at a recent invitational tournament.

The junior girls played for the North Shore championship against Handsworth on Wednesday.

This is the same squad that went undefeated last year to win both the North Shore championship and the Vancouver and District Grade 9 championship.
