A reminder that the famous Harlem Crowns pay a visit to Gibsons tonight (Friday) for a charity game against the Elphinstone senior boys basketball team.
The Cougars are hosting the fundraiser as a salute to Michael Bryant, a popular student and member of the team who passed away suddenly last spring.
Doors open at 5:30 for the 6 p.m. tip-off. Tickets are $10 in advance available at Marketplace IGA in Gibsons or at the school office at $12 at the door. Children six and under are free. There will be a small concession also available.
Minor hockey seeks volunteers
Most of the youth sports going on in our communities would not work without the efforts of volunteers who generously give hours of their time to provide a safe learning environment for the young people they mentor.
These volunteers might be parents of players on the team or they might be other members of the community who have knowledge to share and the time to share it. Volunteers are the engine that drives youth sports, and they are typically the ones who give young people their first impression of the sport being played.
The Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association is seeking a volunteer coaching coordinator and volunteer web content coordinator. Without volunteers, children would not get out on the ice.
“Aside from the physical health reasons, other proposed benefits of sport participation for children include improved self-esteem, social and problem solving skills, academic achievement, and school attendance,” said SCMHA president Sean Gray. “We need the help of those in our community with a passion for children in sport. We need more people to volunteer.”
