The Artificial Reef Society of B.C. (ARSBC) has received final approvals to sink a 110-metre destroyer in Halkett Bay Provincial Marine Park, but an October sink date has already been pushed to November.

“Due to some very last-minute operational difficulties relating to the readiness of the ship for diver access, we have decided on a short-term delay,” said Howard Robins, president of ARSBC.

“The delay will likely result in a November sinking subject to weather conditions and a revised sink date until all the details have been addressed.”

Previously a sink date of Oct. 6 was set for the war ship, the Annapolis. When details were released, the ARSBC noted the sinking would complete a “Wreck Trek adventure experience second to none in the world.”

“With the sinking of the Annapolis on the mainland side, the ARSBC effectively completes the eco-dive travel tourism loop, allowing divers to visit each sink site around Georgia Strait,” the press release stated.

But the fanfare quickly changed when a follow-up press release announced the delay.

“It’s highly disappointing to come this far only to have to reset the event, but it happens with major projects despite best efforts,” Robins said.

“Nevertheless, our goal is to sink the ship in Halkett Bay, Gambier Island this year. We will not be announcing the revised sink date until all the details have been addressed.”
