Gibsons’ residents Gordon Leslie and Peter Grant joined more than 200 cycling enthusiasts and event volunteers from across B.C. for the BC Lung Association’s 28th Bicycle Trek for Life and Breath (Trek) Sept. 8 and 9.
Both have taken part multiple times in the popular two-day, 200 km ride from White Rock to Cultus Lake and back to raise funds in support of vital lung health research, programs and clean air initiatives.
Leslie is a member of Trek team Magellan Law, a top fundraising team who has collectively contributed more than $13,000 to the cause this year alone.
Grant, an individual rider, is a top individual fundraiser who this year contributed close to $3,000.
So far the 2012 event has raised more than $200,000, contributing to the total $5.5 million raised during the event’s 28-year lifespan. Post-event fundraising continues until Oct. 1 and organizers hope the final tally to reach $250,000.
“Many people do the event year after year,” said event organizer Kate Jarvis. “Trek has a real family feel with less fanfare than other, bigger commercial fundraisers but with a lot of heart and soul. It’s a grassroots affair that has grown over time – and there is a true sense of community amongst participants, many of whom meet here once a year and share in the spirit of giving back.”
A quiet phenomenon which began more than two decades ago, the grassroots event has built up over time and serves as a reunion for many ‘trekkers’ who return on average 10 times.
To participate, cyclists raised a minimum donation of $475 and in return, travelled a fully supported bike route from start to finish, with rest stops, food to fuel the journey, fabulous scenery and a slew of fundraising incentive prizes, including the chance to win a trip for two to Paris.
“Trek would not happen without the dedication and enthusiasm of donors, sponsors, volunteers and staff members,” she said. “Our thanks to everyone who came together to pay tribute, to have fun and to raise funds for vital lung health research and much needed support for British Columbians living with breathing problems.”
