Water restrictions now at stage three

News in brief

Effective immediately the Sunshine Coast Regional District has enacted stage three watering restrictions for all Sunshine Coast water users.

According to the SCRD, the Coast water supply is at risk due to prolonged dry weather.

The use of sprinklers to water lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers or vegetables, including newly seeded or sodded lawns is not permitted.

Hand held hoses with shut-off devices can be used for watering trees, shrubs, flowers or vegetables. Use of hoses to wash sidewalks, driveways, vehicles, boats or equipment is not permitted.

Do not fill residential swimming pools, hot tubs, wading pools, garden ponds, or decorative fountains.

Water regulations are enforced, consequences range from fines to temporary shut-off of water services. Report violators to 604-885-6806. Go to www.scrd.ca for details on watering restrictions.

Arena costs to be covered

The SCRD has received notice from their insurance company that the cost to replace the Sunshine Coast Arena’s concrete slab that failed in April, will be covered under the SCRD’s policy.

“The arena will reopen in time for the 2013/14 ice season,” said SCRD recreation services manager Bruce Bauman. “We don’t have a specific date yet, but as soon as we know, we will make an announcement.”

Some of the costs of this major repair will include replacing the concrete slab, boards, glass and mechanical work. Work previously planned for this year to replace the arena lights will also take place before the facility reopens.

For the current season, the Gibsons and Area Community Centre will host all ice sports and public skating.

“We are relieved the insurance claim is settled and the SCRD is anxious to repair the arena as soon as possible,” added SCRD board chair Garry Nohr. “I would like to thank all ice users for their cooperation in getting our new ice schedule going at the Gibsons Community Centre and we look forward to welcoming many skaters and teams back to the Sechelt arena in 2013/2014.”
