Accident now a fatality

Sunshine Coast RCMP

A 56-year-old Kelowna man has died of his injuries following a serious accident in Madeira Park Tuesday morning.

The man was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital and died as a result of his extensive injuries just after 2 p.m. on Sept. 18. Sunshine Coast RCMP are withholding the man's name pending family notification.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, RCMP came onto a collision that had occurred moments before between a motorcycle and a travel van towing a trailer. Witnesses reported seeing the southbound motorcycle go over the centre line rounding an s-curve, near Francis Peninsula Road, where it apparently struck the front end of the travel van.

“The driver of the motorcycle, a 56-year-old Kelowna man, was apparently thrown from the bike into the trailer,” said Cpl. Steve Chubey in a news release. “A second motorcyclist crashed his motorcycle attempting to avoid the collision. The man, who was not riding with the first male, was taken to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.”

Sunshine Coast Traffic Services, the Integrated Collision Analyst and Re-constructionist Services (ICARS) were all on scene Tuesday investigating. A cause has yet to be determined. The investigation is on-going.
