Adult leagues return to the pitch

Soccer

As the adult leagues returned to sunny skies last weekend, women’s league champs Blazers edged out Source in a 6-5 scorefest.

A significant part of the game was spent digging the 11 goals out of the net and running back to the centre line high-fiving. Blazers’ goals came from Chelsea Holm, Christine Campbell, and two goals apiece from Dawne Clancy and Ashley Taylor. Carmen Allen scored her first goal ever for Source.

The men’s league got off to a stuttering start, as last year’s final rematch of Wolves/CPU couldn’t muster the numbers. Nonetheless, in the Chiefs/Sita fixture, Scotty Johnson came out sniping, as he tucked a 30-yard ripper high into the sidemesh, with the Chiefs adding two more to go up 3-0 at the half.

The comeback kings at Sita’s would have none of it though, as Richard Watson hit the net twice, followed by an equalizer from old warhorse Dave Nanson.

The teams looked ready to split points until Tony ‘Celtic Tiger’ Duffy pounced on a ball and, with a little leprechaun luck, landed a curling 20-yarder into the net for the win.

In case anyone ever wondered who would win in a fight between a Bruin and a Banana, the answer, this week, would be a Bruin, as Ridgepoint beat Pender 5-1.

Ridgepoint was up 2-0 with goals from Mike Sopow and Jason Wilson when Marcel Van Der Steldt tucked one under a diving Ryan Stevens for a half time score of 2-1.

Bob Burrows then put the game out of reach, followed by a hammered home header by Eoin Ross, with one more coming from Grant Marshall owning the goal mouth real estate, though its sale is negotiable.

The Bananas usually are a bit green at the start of the season — at least until the fishing season closes and more players start coming up the wharf. However, with Rod ‘Cuddles’ Kammerle taking his youth team to a provincial cup championship, the Bananas’ bar is high.

Rumours that appreciative soccer moms would have a Tickle-Me Rodmo doll ready for the holiday season are false.
