Archival newspapers a success

Editor:

In response to the Aug. 9 article “Digital newspaper archive set to launch,” I would like to clarify UBC’s position on copyright for the record.

Up until our collection of Coast News newspapers, the BC Historical Newspapers website only included newspapers published between 1865 and 1924. Our collection includes issues published up to 1989, and copyright restrictions still apply in certain cases.

Before adding the Coast News to the site, UBC’s legal team assessed the risks involved and worked with the publisher of the paper to craft a distribution agreement that both parties were comfortable with. Although this took time, it was important and necessary work to set the standard for future collections of this kind.

We are fully confident in the work that has been done and reassured that all parties involved have gone above and beyond to assure this project is a success.
