Dodgers fall short at provincials

Baseball

The Gibsons Mosquito Dodgers just fell short of qualifying for the medal round at the provincial championships held over the August long weekend in Surrey.

The four-day event started Aug. 2 with the skills competition where the Dodgers showed off their skills.

Round robin play began on Aug. 3 where Gibsons dropped their opening game to Burnaby and later lost another close game to Surrey.

On Saturday morning, Gibsons got off to a fast start against Vernon and never looked back winning 6-2.

Next up was a game against Oceanside with a trip to the medal round on the line. Oceanside brought out their bats and led 11-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, but the Dodgers battled back to close the gap to 12-6 heading into the sixth. Gibsons plated a pair and had the bases loaded with two outs, but their comeback fell short as they lost 12-8 to finish the tournament.

Team members included: Brock Flatt, Declan Coyle, Dylan Strom, Ethan Ellis Winters, Grant Hoekstra, Jake Richmond Benner, Jonah Rowan, Kaden Sauer, Liam Allen, Lucas Bartley, Mark Olsen, Mason Struck and Virgil Perkins. Coaches included: Eric Olson, Dann Flatt and Matt Olson and team manager Nancy Ellis Winters.
