Cat bylaw: look at North Van’s

Editor:

In my 10 years of living in Sechelt, I don’t think I’ve ever come upon so many letters that I would love to contact and/or respond to. The one that hit me most was from Mr. and Mrs. Meyer regarding a cat bylaw.

Prior to moving to Sechelt I lived in North Vancouver and spent around three years volunteering at a wildlife centre.

First, I’m very sorry to disappoint you, Mr. and Mrs. Meyer, but humans kill more birds than all cats. Not only that, it is part of a cat’s diet to eat birds, along with many other wild animals. Making a law that says no cat is ever allowed outside is called cruelty to animals, something that should never be thought of.

As for the bylaw, I don’t understand why our mayor and council can’t just grab another municipality’s cat bylaw and put that through. Then if they feel they need to change something, they can do so. It is a lot faster, easier and cheaper than figuring out what to put in one.

I do know first hand that North Vancouver has a very good cat bylaw that could be looked at.
