Journey sets a new standard

Pulling Together 2012
Photo submitted

The 2012 Pulling Together journey took almost 40 people from the Sechelt and Gibsons area to the beautiful territory of the Sliammon people near Powell River on the upper Sunshine Coast recently. There they joined about 250 other paddlers of the Pulling Together family from across B.C. During their time there they were treated to friendship, generosity and hospitality.

What an honour and privilege!

For all those who participated, this journey will forever be at the top of their list, simply because of the people of Sliammon. It has made an indelible mark in all of their hearts.

Their travels took them to some of the most beautiful waters their canoes and crews had ever seen. They visited ancient and sacred sites, some dated to be more than 8,000 years old, and they were trusted with the stories and legends that are a part of the proud history of the Sliammon.

As their canoes left those waters, they left behind new-found friendship and respect.  It was offered that the Pulling Together canoes could return one day.

How could one refuse? To visit Sliammon again one day will truly feel like coming home to all of us from the Lower Sunshine Coast.

Thank you, Sliammon. You have set the bar so high for others to follow.
