It’s July already and we’re still being hosed to the tune of $1.99 a pound for tomatoes. If I were a landowner I’d be out there whispering sweet nothings to my little Early Girls, but I live in a condo with a deck not quite big enough to swing a cat without destroying my hanging basket of cherry tomatoes. Which is why I showed up early at Gibsons municipal hall on June 28 to ingratiate myself into a community garden project. We were six people in total — only six! 

I understand not everyone wants to get involved in meetings and such, so I went out on a limb with a wild hunch that there were more than half a dozen people in Gibsons who would like to avoid a produce section. Am I right? 

Consider this — a community garden is not just about getting your hands dirty. It’s not just a secure food strategy protected by a deer-resistant fence. It’s a social centre. It’s an education project. But it’s not going to happen without fresh veggie lovers stepping forward.

Let us know that next year you’d like to become lord of a productive little patch in the heart of Gibsons. No need to do meetings. Just call Wendy Gilbertson at the town hall and let her know.
