The Coast Recital Society’s (CRS) annual scholarships were recently awarded to 18 local students to further their classical music studies.
Karl Petersohn, who received the highest grade from the CRS scholarship adjudicators, was awarded the Ross Brougham scholarship ($500). Brougham served the CRS in various positions during his long association with the society, including treasurer, chair of the scholarship committee and program annotator.
Stephanie Schweighardt received a $500 scholarship, given in memory of the late Marlene Paggio, a long time CRS subscriber.
Scholarships were also awarded to: Maya Broeke, Esmé McLaughlin Brooks, Gabriele Crudele, Hanna Crudele, James Flemming, Brison Geue, Simon Gidora, Oliver Gidora, Arianna Mason, Rowan McEwen, Breanna Picard, Emily Picard, Ruby Riesco, Julie Shibasaka, Emily Stoddart and Talia Strang.
In addition, six CRS adjudicators’ choice awards were awarded as part of this year’s SC Festival of the Performing Arts, in the following disciplines: strings: Emily Stoddart and Esme McLaughlin Brooks; vocal: Oliver Gidora; piano: Talia Strang and Ruby Riesco; and percussion, winds and brass: Breanna Picard.
The members of the CRS scholarship committee are: John Storer (chair), Jane Whiteley, Elise Buqué, Wendy Humphreys Tebbutt, Kathleen Hovey and Frances Heinsheimer Wainwright.
This year, the CRS awarded a total of $3,875 to Sunshine Coast classical music students. CRS scholarships are funded from the sale of CDs at CRS concerts and from the proceeds from unused CRS tickets returned for resale.
CRS scholarships applications are accepted in February of each year and are open to Sunshine Coast students, 25 years or younger, who are studying classical music. More information is available on the CRS website www.coastrecitalsociety.ca.
