The recent Women in Leadership workshop was a great success.

The Sunshine Coast Skating Club partnered with the Sunshine Coast Regional District, Promotion Plus and Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) to host a day-long workshop with topics such as conflict resolution, influencing change, and volunteers: how to get ‘em and how to keep ‘em.

Presenters were Irene Schell and Wendy Martin-Stroyan.

Schell has worked in amateur sport administration since 1989, and is currently the event and technology manager for the BC Games Society. She has also served on the boards of various sport organizations including Sport BC and ProMOTION Plus and the B.C. organization for girls and women in sport and physical activity, and was the Chef de Mission for Team B.C. for the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games.

Martin-Stroyan is the current chairman of the BC Coast Region of Skate Canada.

She has a background in sport administration, having previously worked for the provincial sport governing body of figure skating (the BC/YT Section of Skate Canada) as program developer. She has been involved in regional, provincial, national and international events that host and recruit volunteers.

There has been talk of making this an annual event. If you are interested in either participating or becoming involved, or would like to bring one or more of these workshops to your group, please contact Jill-Marie Jarvis at Jm.scsc@telus.net.
