Time to end hunger

Editor:

Re: Viveca Ohm’s letter hungry kids (Coast Reporter, May 11).

Throughout Canada’s history, people have been led to believe that Canadian children are well fed, but when the facts are presented, the population tends to ignore the fact that there are 300,000 to 500,000 children suffering hunger. Why? There can be no excuse for this unacceptable situation.

History tells us that wealthy Canada agreed to the United Nations 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child for adequate nutrition, housing, recreation and medical services necessary to sustain human life, but child hunger continued to 1989 when Parliament unanimously resolved to seek to achieve the goal of eliminating poverty among Canadian children by the year 2000. How much longer must hungry, helpless kids wait for sufficient nutritious food?

It’s time Canada’s well fed and highly paid members of Parliament honour their principled promises to Canadian hungry children — we will end your hunger now!
