Garbage, sewer fees adopted

Sechelt

Sechelt council gave final reading and adoption to new garbage, recycling and sewer user fees at their regular council meeting May 2.

The annual charge for collecting garbage and recycling in Sechelt is now $161.70, and each single-detached family residence will now pay $372 a year for sewer fees.

Drag racing

Dave Marshall of the Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association was before council to talk about how far the group has come since it started in 1998 and to explain how future development of the airstrip will impact the annual races.

Currently the association holds two drag races a year at the airport with one scheduled for May 27. However, Sechelt is seeking improvements at the airport that could eventually result in scheduled daily service. That scheduled air traffic would essentially force the association off the airstrip for the twice-annual drag races.

“However, about 100 feet east of your current runway we’ve levelled, compacted, surveyed and built the base … to build a drag strip adjacent to the airstrip. So we’d love to stay with you guys. We’d love to be a part of you forever,” Marshall said.

The cost to build that drag strip would fall to the club. Marshall said since its inception, the group has already spent more than $100,000 at the airport clearing land, putting in underground wiring, creating drainage ditching and installing a second row of runway lights.

“[We’ve put in] approximately $130,000 plus volunteer labour at the market value of about $450,000, and that is our vested interest in your airport,” Marshall said.

Mobile vendor

Council released an in camera item that shows the new Lighthouse on Location truck will be allowed to occupy the Davis Bay mobile vendor pad for three years, ending on March 31, 2015.

Arts Festival

Council released a second in camera item approving the extension of the District’s contract with Arca-dian Productions to produce, market and fundraise for the 2012 Sechelt Arts Festival. The company will receive $1,000 per month for seven months starting June 1 and ending Dec. 31.

Wastewater

Another in-camera item released May 2 instructs staff to write a letter asking to meet with the short-listed wastewater treatment facility project proponents.
